Colosseum

The Colosseum is Rome's Flavian Amphitheatre, the largest amphitheater of the ancient world and the city's most recognizable archaeological monument. Built in the 1st century CE under the Flavian emperors, it hosted gladiatorial games, animal hunts, public spectacles, and complex staged events using machinery beneath the arena floor. Official 2026 hours list the Colosseum opening at 8:30 a.m. From March 29 to September 30, 2026, the park closes at 7:15 p.m., with last admission at 6:15 p.m.; from October 1 to 24 last admission is 5:30 p.m. and closing is 6:30 p.m.; from October 25, 2026 to February 28, 2027 last admission is 3:30 p.m. and closing is 4:30 p.m. The site is closed December 25, 2026 and January 1, 2027. Free admission days include the first Sunday of the month, April 25, June 2, and November 4. Colosseum entry requires a reserved time slot, and ticket sales open 30 days before the visit date through the official ticketing platform.

Plan two to three hours if combining the Colosseum with the Roman Forum and Palatine, or longer for underground, arena, attic, guided, or evening products. The standard 24-hour ticket gives one access to the first and second levels of the Colosseum and one access to the Roman Forum-Palatine archaeological area, including ongoing exhibitions. The official site also lists Full Experience tickets for the Underground and Arena, Arena-only tickets, panoramic-lift attic tickets, and night options. Bring identification because tickets are nominal; for visits from May 9, 2026, ticket-holder name changes are restricted and must be handled through official rules.
