Lithuania
Lithuania is a Baltic country with a strong mix of medieval streets, Jewish heritage, Soviet and independence history, forests, lakes, cycling routes, spa towns, and Baltic Sea dunes. The official Lithuania Travel site highlights Vilnius, Kaunas, the Curonian Spit, Plateliai, Anyksciai, ethnographic regions, food and drink, ecotourism, wellness, active recreation, history, culture, art, and seasonal experiences. UNESCO-listed sites include Vilnius Historic Centre, the Curonian Spit, Kernave Archaeological Site, the Struve Geodetic Arc, and Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919-1939.
First-time visitors can spend four to seven days between Vilnius, Trakai, Kaunas, and either the Curonian Spit or Aukstaitija/Anyksciai nature areas. Vilnius rewards two days for Old Town lanes, church interiors, Gediminas Hill, Uzupis, museums, cafes, and nearby Paneriai memorial context; Trakai Castle is an easy half-day trip; Kaunas adds interwar modernism, street art, museums, and a more local urban rhythm. The Curonian Spit needs at least a full day from Klaipeda, but one or two nights in Nida or Juodkrante are better for dunes, lagoon sunsets, cycling, and forests.
The U.S. State Department lists Lithuania at Level 1, exercise normal precautions, with no visa required for U.S. tourists for stays under 90 days in the Schengen area and passports needing three months validity beyond departure. Lithuania is relatively easy by public transport between major cities, while a car helps for national parks, villages, and the coast. Summer is best for long daylight, beaches, cycling, and festivals; winter has short days but atmospheric Christmas markets and lower crowds; spring and autumn suit city breaks and photography. Lithuania suits history travelers, Jewish heritage visitors, cyclists, food travelers, spa travelers, families, and photographers who like cities paired with quiet landscapes.
Visitor Tip: Reserve Curonian Spit lodging early in summer and plan the ferry, park rules, and dune access before going; Vilnius, Trakai, and Kaunas are easy to combine without renting a car.
