Ireland

Ireland is a compact but varied destination built around Dublin, coastal drives, music pubs, literary history, medieval sites, archaeological landscapes, gardens, food, and walkable towns. Tourism Ireland's official visitor site organizes the island into regions such as Dublin, Ireland's Ancient East, the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland's Hidden Heartlands, Belfast, and Northern Ireland, and highlights major sights including the Cliffs of Moher, Skellig Islands, Blarney Castle, Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College's Book of Kells, Rock of Cashel, Brú na Bóinne, Giant's Causeway, and Titanic Belfast.

A first visit usually works best at seven to ten days, with fewer bases than many travelers expect: Dublin plus Galway or Killarney is a manageable introduction, while two weeks allows the Wild Atlantic Way, Dingle or Ring of Kerry, Cork, Kilkenny, Belfast, and the Causeway Coast. History travelers should prioritize Brú na Bóinne, Kilmainham Gaol, Rock of Cashel, and medieval Kilkenny; hikers and photographers should look to Connemara, Achill Island, Kerry, the Burren, and the north coast; families often appreciate castles, farms, beaches, and short scenic drives.

Ireland is best from late spring through early autumn for daylight and outdoor access, though rain and wind are possible in every season. Renting a car gives the most flexibility in rural areas, but drivers must adjust to left-side driving, narrow lanes, roundabouts, and limited parking in historic towns; trains and buses work well between larger cities. The U.S. State Department advisory issued March 20, 2026, was Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, noting petty crime in tourist areas, rental-car targeting, and possible demonstrations. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days; Ireland is outside the Schengen Area, and passports must be valid for the stay.

Visitor Tip: Do not overpack the itinerary: weather, narrow roads, and scenic stops make Irish travel slower than mileage suggests. Keep valuables out of rental cars at cliffs, beaches, and trailheads, and reserve popular sites such as Kilmainham Gaol, Book of Kells, and Brú na Bóinne ahead.
